After digesting the huge amounts of food overnight at the truly historic, 125-year-old, Sandstone Manor, a new day dawned for us. As we were still not hungry, we only had coffee, which we enjoyed sitting on the stairs. The view over the bay was beautiful, the sun was warming and our host soon joined us.
Actually, we were in a hurry again, but we couldn’t miss the many tips for worthwhile destinations. There was a lot to experience around Mossel Bay and we agreed with our landlord that we could stay in South Africa for at least another 3 months without getting bored.
And so he had convinced us of a destination that had not been on our plan before. So we threw our route overboard and headed for Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. There, older and younger, bigger and smaller cats enjoy their existence in peace. So we gladly paid the entrance fee, knowing that we were at least supporting a good cause.
Before Jukani, our way had led us through the village of Wilderness. There we had a great breakfast right on the white, 3.5km long sandy beach. Unfortunately, there was a very strong wind that day and the water was freezing cold, so we quickly moved on.
On the way to our next destination, we made a short stop. In itself, the Bloukrans Bridge was and is an enormous wonder. At 451m long and 216m high, it is the largest bridge in Africa. But if the view is not enough, you can throw yourself off the bridge and try a bungee jump. In fact, everything in us was tingling to tackle this adventure again. But what can we say … we are not getting any younger and certain aches and pains, as well as our doctors, had advised us against a jump.
After Andreas again failed to get around a conversation with his many African brothers in the car park, we drove on to the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp, a part of the Garden Route National Park. There you could hike very well and our destination was an approx. 80m long suspension bridge to a small bay where we wanted to enjoy the sunset in peace.
Unfortunately, Andreas forgot his camera in the car, so there are only mobile phone photos and the bay was not quite so quiet. Three young South Africans had booked themselves in for an extensive Instagram photo shoot – so besides the beautiful landscape, we at least had something to smile about.
